ColtonComing from one of the most known communities 18 year old Colton Thomas from Goodwill describes himself as just this simple kid with this huge brain inside just for the future. “I’m fascinated by music and I am interested in the music industry. Music is my life right now.” ColtonT boldly stated. He’s also the type to side with his heart when it comes to real things like music. ColtonT’s hobbies include dressing, playing basketball, surfing the internet, recording songs, performing on stage and just do what he mostly love, to sing. Quite a combination we can all say. He states that he is just the type that would never give up. “When ColtonT was first trying to make it as a new artist, he was willing to take risks and try anything and I admire that.” As we have heard in most of this brilliant artist song his unique slogan is GtWagwanE- Singing slogan which means ‘God Ah gwan Tru and he will alwayz be with me = {E}’… the E stands for Emmanuel which means God is with me. Colton also stated that his reason for his stage name which is ColtonT was because he was not locally known at the time so using something close to his real name would help listeners put a face to that name.
Colton describes his own music as fun and youthful while at the same time signifying deep meaning. “My music tells stories. Some of those stories can be meaningful and still be fun. I never choose a song that I can’t relate to in some way, shape, or form. My music will always reflect who I am.” Colton’s philosophy that gets him through life is “We humans make life more complex than it really is, everything is much too simple to make complications because to every start there must be an end.”
When asked about his first experience in So Sick Studio, ColtonT responded, “So Sick is a Group Formed In The Start with Kiidjay Triggah {producer} and himself from then on known as So Sick Entertainment. Colton was amazed at how well he did in the studio the first time. He said he took to it like a duck takes to water!” Colton also stated that he has a passion for music especially dancehall and reggae music and he loves and feels comfortable with the way he executes it and the people loves his boldness on stage and creativity that he presents in his songs. In a disappointed tone he stated that he feels a bit too limited in this country.
Colton’s voice is rather developed for a 18-year-old since his studio performance required little to no tuning. That doesn’t mean that Colton doesn’t seek constant improvement and constructive criticism in all areas. “You can be a performer and not be an artist, but I am an artist. I have spent time studying and researching everything I can about the music industry and becoming an artist. I am not only focusing on my song writing skills and singing, but I am also developing my total package including my image and my stage presence. This isn’t just a dream of mine, this is a goal that I am determined to achieve and I won’t give up.” Colton takes and applies all the advice he receives from his single mother Ms. Margret Graham who serves as a mentor to him and also who he refers to as his role model.
In addition to Vybz Kartel, Colton’s influences include Black Ryno. He was most touched by Ryno’s music when he discovered him on YouTube “Fi Have Nuff ” is one of ColtonT’s personal favorite songs from Ryno. Colton jokingly said that some people might say that he’s a goody-goody, but he doesn’t mind that. He’d rather be known for doing good things than doing bad things!” Colton asserts. Colton also stated that he credits Gyptian, Jah Cure , Aima Moses, Dr Silk & Atunyah for being an influential role model to him as well.
It is Colton’s hope that his music will provide a new means for him to give back to his community. “I would like to give back to my recording studio for teaching me all that I know,” he says.
Having been asked to be involved in church choir Colton refused because he was scared, but was involved in various musicals throughout high school and college, Colton is no stranger to the stage. “I feel at home on stage, so every stage I step foot on becomes my home during that performance,” Colton states emphatically. Colton has had the opportunity to perform in a variety of places, in prom at high schools, in village feasts, at reggae nights down to Harlem Plaza. “I sing all the time so wherever I am is my stage!”
Colton encourages all artists to put their mind on what they want to do and forget about all the obstacles in life. He noted that every artist gets discouraged, he jokingly made note that even he was discouraged at one point in time that he gave up his dream because of the critics he received. With God at his side he decided to stand up for what he loved and what he feels comfortable in doing. With his determination singing is now becoming a dream he wishes to fulfill very soon. Colton released very famous tracks such as Girl of my Dreams, Gangsters fall in Love, Whine Gyal and the young ladies in Dominica most preferred Bonita & up to date In My Life. These songs have all left memories one way or another in the Dominica’s youth lives.
Colton has plans to perform on bigger stages but also want to do well in school to shoot two birds with one stone. That’s pretty important; everyone needs a backup plan!” “I wanted to be a vet because I love animals, but my passion for music and dream of rocking any stage in the world sometimes over powers that, so I’m just bearing the two in mind”. Colton also knows that, with God on his side, anything is possible for him to achieve his future goals and make his dreams come true.
“Everyone has dreams and goals,” he states. “I am just going for mine to the extreme!”
